My Soul, the Sea

I’m talking with a friend about God and about life,
and I’ve just said, it’s like pushing on an open door,
something gives, when a woman pushes through the heavy,
glass door of the coffee shop, and the morning sun shines
through her hair, and for a moment I am in love with her,
with the softness of her face and pursing of her lips.
How often I fall in love. Every day I fall in love
a hundred times. All the beautiful women in the world!
Their hands are like doves. Their thoughts are often
elsewhere. They are wearing long, lavender scarves,
and I pretend not to notice, but I do. I am standing at the door,
Jesus says, knocking, and he is. I have great confidence
in my masks. They are good masks, hard as candy,
and as brittle, too, and underneath them is whatever reality
is. Maybe an abyss. Maybe a vast cavern. Maybe a sky
with stars. I am pushing through an open door
and I am the door. My ego is a boat. My soul, the sea.
